The Township provides a variety of public works services including the maintenance of municipal roadways and drainage systems, the issuance of road opening permits, snow removal, garbage and recycling collection, buildings and grounds maintenance and the maintenance of recreational facilities. The majority of public works services are performed by the Township’s twelve person Public Works Department. Two services, recycling collection and garbage collection are provided via contracts with outside entities.

Brush Collection

The Township Public Works Department conducts a semi-annual brush collection program to help residents remove from their property the sticks, branches and brush that nature has caused to fall during the year. The program is designed primarily for homeowners who have little to no acreage on which to discard the materials, but is open to all Township residents. The Public Works crews will not collect excessive loads cleared from the property by private contractors.

If you have brush to be collected by the public works department please follow these simple guidelines:

  1. Place material at the side of the road by 7:00 p.m. (during the fall or spring collection period), with ends facing the roadway.
  2. Do not tie bundles with wire! Use string only.
  3. Do not put steel rods or any metal objects in with the wood.
  4. All material must fit through the chipper. That means bundles must be less than twelve inches in diameter and six feet in length.
  5. Please no tree stumps, and no logs over six feet long - they will not be collected

It is crucial that the above guidelines be followed. In the past, our men have been caught off guard when chipping bundles that contained wire and even metal rods, hidden inside the brush. This will damage the chipper or worse, cause serious injury to our workers.

The spring brush collection typically begins in May and the fall collection in October. Please call  973-543-4509 for exact dates.

Recycling

Recycling collection is a service provided by the County through the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority. Recycling is collected from all Township residents every other Monday. The 2000 schedule along with information on how to prepare your recyclables for collection are  available here.

Garbage Collection

Garbage is collected once a week using Blue Diamond Disposal, a private contractor. Township residents pay only for the amount of garbage they produce. The hauler’s overhead costs are paid by contract through municipal taxes. You pay a sticker fee to cover the cost of disposal at the Morris County Transfer Station.

Stickers are available in lots of ten at $.60 per sticker for 15 pounds of garbage.

One sticker must be affixed for every 15 pounds of garbage. If several bags are placed in a garbage can, place one sticker on the top bag so that it is visible when the lid is removed. Garbage without a sticker will not be collected. Stickers may be purchased from Blue Diamond by mail (Blue Diamond Disposal, P.O. Box 267, Succasunna, New Jersey 07876) or at the Mendham Apothecary located in the Village Shopping Center on Route 24 in Mendham.  Stickers are sold in packs of 10/$6

Garbage includes all waste resulting from handling, preparation, cooking or consumption of foods. Garbage also includes normal household rubbish or refuse which is not recyclable, not hazardous waste and not bulk trash.

Bulk trash includes furniture, carpets mattresses, large toys, empty paint cans (not oil based), or other items too large to fit into a garbage can. Bulk trash does not require a weight sticker. Bulk trash DOES NOT INCLUDE any type of construction, building, demolition or renovation materials, automotive parts, or vegetative waste. White goods (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, washers & dryers) are also collected, however, you must certify the removal of freon.  Call Blue Diamond Disposal (973-598-9800) to make special arrangements.

* Residents not wishing to participate in the Township garbage collection program may opt to hire their own private contractor directly.  For information on private waste haulers consult the local yellow pages of your phone book.

There is a nominal charge of $2.00 per tires without rims, $6.00 per tires with rims, batteries, $1.00 each and oil is free of charge. The collection days are typically scheduled in May and October. To assist the Public Works Department in their snow removal activities residents are asked not to park vehicles on the street during snow or ice storms. Questions concerning snow removal services should be directed to the Public Works Department.
