Township Provides Assistance To World Trade Center Rescue Effort
In response to a request for assistance from the Morris County (New
Jersey) District Area First Aid Counsel the Mendham Township First Aid Squad
deployed three Squad members and a Township ambulance to assist with the World
Trade Center rescue effort.
The Squad was requested to mobilize by the District Area Mobilization
Coordinator at 5:00 p.m. on the afternoon of September 11.
Three Squad members led by Captain Marlene Russell reported the arranged
meeting area in Morristown at 9:00 p.m. At
the District Office the Squad members were informed that they were needed to
provide relief to First Aid Squads already on the scene and they were dispatched
to the staging area at Liberty State Park in Jersey City.
At approximately 3:00 a.m. the Township Squad members were placed into
active duty. The three member crew
was transported by small boats to the “ground zero” area of the rescue
effort. The crew was then dispatched
to one of the numerous triage sites set up at the scene to relieve other
emergency service personnel. The
crew remained at the triage sites through the remainder of the night until they
were relieved and sent home at 12:30 p.m. on September 12.
The First Aid Squad along with the Township’s other Emergency Services
remain on standby and are available should a request come in for further
assistance from those in charge of the continuing rescue effort.
